Suds & Science—Changing the World. Why Women in Science Matter

From cutting-edge malaria research to new hope for cystinosis patients; from internet security to understanding the developing, adolescent brain, women in science are changing the world. More importantly, they are changing how research is conducted. In 2013, the FDA advised women to cut the dosage of the sleeping pill Ambien in half, as it was discovered that the active ingredient in the drug stayed in women’s bodies longer than in men’s—a fact that was overlooked in drug trials because of routine bias that does not include sex as a variable in scientific research.
