Solana Beach School District-STREAM

We will have students(K-6) showcasing their projects that they have completed in our STREAM program. This students are passionate about their work and look forward to sharing their projects showcasing their solutions to real-world issues to a public audience. Our booth will also include an engineering challenge that the students will help guide attendance through. We have participated in this event for the last 3 year and are excited to be back!

BioEASI (Biology Education and Art for Science Innovation)

Ever wonder how scientists see inside tiny cells and organisms to study them? Fluorescent, or glowing, proteins are the answer! These useful proteins can light up the insides of cells and tissues. Researchers from UCSD will demonstrate, through simple games, how scientists engineer fluorescent proteins and what kinds of questions they can help to answer. These glowing proteins can also make biological samples into beautiful art, which you will see at our booth.

JCS San Diego Academy

The students of Mr. Rogalski's art & science classes have designed and created an interactive installation called, "The Atomic Dance". It uses dance as a metaphor for chemical reactions and the cycling of elements through our environment. Lipson Lab from SDSU worked with the JCS San Diego Academy to study chemistry through field trips, guest lectures and even brought our atomic experiment to the Arctic Circle to study how elements like carbon and chlorine cycle through the tundra ecosystem.

SASE at UCSD

We will be displaying thermochromic slime; it is slime that changes color depending on the temperature. This is mainly geared towards younger students, however, will be interesting for people of all ages. We will have the slime prepared as well as different materials that can alter its temperature, although playing around with it with your hands will be enough. We will be teaching the concepts behind thermochromism and its applications in the real world.

Cox Communications

Cox IP Packet Racer - students and families can build, decorate and race their own IP Packet Racer on our custom track against the Cox High Speed Network. This activity engages kids in many aspects of STEAM. Each child will take home their packet racer after engaging in the activity.

International Bridge Technologies, Inc.

Our practicing bridge engineers will share their knowledge and passion for structural engineering, which draws on math, physics, design, art, materials, and construction. In addition to illustrative exhibits, we provide an engaging hands-on model bridge building activity that is designed to introduce youth of all ages to basic structural engineering concepts. Bridge model kits are used, consisting of paint-mixing sticks, binder clips, chains, S-hooks, and large bottles of water for load testing.

Destination Imagination

We will have a series of hands-on instant challenges for kids and adults to solve. Our booth will be colorful, have creative displays and information about our program. Instant Challenges present students with a problem and some common materials (paper clips, paper, envelopes etc.). Students must solve the challenge in a quick and creative way. Destination Imagination's mission is to inspire the next generation of innovators, leaders and creative thinkers.
