Marine Genome Project

The Marine Genome Project focuses on using genetic tools for marine conservation efforts, while increasing diversity, inclusion and accessibility to marine science. Participants can extract DNA from strawberries, assemble the genome of fish, build an underwater kelp forest, go on a virtual scuba dive, and help scientist identify different species living in the ocean

SDSU Center for Autism

Brain-themed coloring and mazes, brain trivia games, Stroop effect demonstration (kids say the color of the word, not what the word says), pipe cleaner neuron activity (kids make a neuron out of pipe cleaner and plastic beads to take home)

Southwest HS (SD)

The students will be determining how virtual reality goggles impact vital signs like heart rate and breathing rate. It should be pretty interactive. The lead teacher is working with a cohort of Biomedical pathway students. I can send some photos of the equipment.

San Diego State University

Student clubs and outreach organizations from San Diego State University will provide engaging and interactive demonstrations and activities for students and families of all ages. From rocket launches and racecars to marine animals and sound waves, audiences will learn directly from SDSU students in science and engineering about their favorite subjects.

Pittcon Conference and Exposition

Visitors will launch a rocket, study the amazing properties of water, view microscopic life forms and write a secret message with the magic of science. These hands-on demos will share basic concepts in chemistry, biology, and physics using safe and readily available materials. Booth visitors will be eligible for a free registration to the Pittcon Conference and Exposition which will be held in San Diego in February 2024.

San Diego Miramar College

Pipette Art: Participants will learn how to use the micro pipette to measure liquids in 50ul to 100ul increments, and learn the importance of this technique in science labs. Multiple liquid samples will be colored by food coloring. They can either measure unto laminated plates or filter paper to make artful patterns which they could take home as bookmarks.

UCSD Biomedical Engineering Society

UCSD BMES will create a model of the cardiovascular system for SDFSE 2023. We will use a system of clear tubing along with red colored water and clear orbeez to simulate the major arteries of the system and red blood cells. We will connect this system to a manual pump for the user to interact with. With each pump, LED lights connected to an arduino will indicate heart rate, blood oxygenation, and fluid flow.

UCSD Bioengineering Graduate Society

UCSD BEGS will present 2 bioengineering demos at SDFSE 2023. The first demo showcases engineering design principles in the form of brainstorming, designing, and building a bacteriophage that will “attack” a bacteria of their choosing. The second demo will focus on tissue properties and structures as it relates to creating solutions for problems in human health. Students will replicate different tissue layers with common household items for bone, skin, and cardiac tissue.
