STEAM Week Live Main Stage

The San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering, presented by the Illumina Foundation, will be fully virtual this year from April 24-May 2 on lovestemsd.org.

The Live Main Stage event is from 10am-6pm on Tuesday, April 27 and Wednesday, April 28 with fun and interactive STEAM activities, a special Women in STEAM event as well as a COVID-19 conversation for kids and teens.

ScienceING Chats

Meet scientists and engineers live over Zoom for a Q&A about their work, what inspired them to get into the world of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and much more. Engaging 15-20-minute videos will be posted in advance showcasing what each professional does in his or her work and discoveries and inventions they've made this last year.

STEM in San Diego: Resources & Needs

The purpose of this convening will be to collectively explore the current state of STEM in the region, identify STEM resources/partners and discuss STEM needs in the greater San Diego area. We hope that by bringing important stakeholders together we can host a cohesive conversation about the importance of approaching STEM in San Diego through a multifaceted lens. STEM is much more than education, it is the fastest growing workforce sector, a booming industry in San Diego and provides ample opportunity for upward mobility - especially among for those from underrepresented backgrounds.

County of San Diego, Department of environmental Health (Beach and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program)

Beach and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program will use a 3-D watershed model to demonstrate how surface water run-of and pollution leads to contamination of our beaches and bays. This impact on our recreational waters can affect our health. Also, we plan on demonstrating the various laboratory processes used for water quality testing in our public health lab, which help identify if the water has microbial pathogens.

Southwest High School Biomedical Pathway (Good Vibrations)

You’ve likely experienced older adults with hearing aids struggling to hear what you’re saying to them. You probably feel like hearing loss might have something to do with age, right? But have you ever considered which types of sounds they find the hardest to hear? Since sounds are made of waves which vibrate at different frequencies, certain types of sounds are harder to hear! In this exploration, festival goers will participate in an experience to investigate how aging impacts hearing.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps

Guests will understand the principles of buoyancy by experimenting with their own diver. Participants will be able to- ● Define and understand the concept of buoyancy ● Explain how a fish moves up and down in the water column ● Engage in the scientific process by conducting a water experiment using a diver and playing with the concept of buoyancy.

National University

Learn about ocean plastic pollution and animal anatomy! Our table will offer examples of ocean plastic pollution and visual materials related to this. Visitors will do a quick experiment to determine the type of plastic in the pollutants. For younger children, NOAA-published age-appropriate materials (coloring sheets, puzzles) will be available. In addition, we will offer human and animal models for examination, with visitors being asked to identify different anatomical regions.

National Park Service - Cabrillo National Monument

Festival participants will discover and learn about the science projects performed at Cabrillo National Monument with hands-on, inquiry-based activities that highlight our herpetofauna (reptile & amphibian) monitoring and Science Explorer's Club. Participants will take data about our native reptiles & amphibians as well as exploring other science themes (tidepool monitoring, bird monitoring, etc.).

General Dynamics NASSCO

NASSCO welcomes families to our booth for an interactive build-your-boat competition. Volunteers from San Diego's hometown shipyard will be on site to describe how ships are designed, built and repaired in historic Barrio Logan. A model of a new Navy ship - the TAO oil replenishment ship - will be on display. This new series of ship for the Navy will travel the world securing our nation.
