San Diego Miramar College hosts Science Fun for Kids ages 5-99

San Diego Miramar College will host a morning of FREE, FUN SCIENCE on Saturday, March 14th, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for kids from 5 to 99 at its Mira Mesa Campus (10440 Black Mountain Road). The Miramar College science faculty, staff and students will present a variety “hands- on” activities in all areas of Math and Science: Biology, Chemistry, Math, Physiology, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Robotics. All ages are welcome to enjoy this free event with free parking on campus!

The Curiosity Cube is a retrofitted shipping container turned mobile science lab. The Curiosity Cube brings hands-on science experiments to visitors of all ages with the goal of sparking curiosity within the future generation of scientists!

UCSD Scientista and Graduate/Undergraduate bioinformatics council (GBIC/UBIC)

Science and LEGO! Through hands-on interactive games, our booth will focus on exposing students to the wonders of bioinformatics and computational genomics. We will have a Lego-DNA sequencer, and we will allow students to 'generate' the DNA of the monster they draw. They will see the process of sequencing DNA through this game, and gain some understanding of Next-Generation Sequencing technology. We believe this game will spark the students’ interests in biology, bioinformatics, and science! LEG

We will be making liquid nitrogen ice cream as well as other, interactive activities with liquid nitrogen and dry ice.

Algae Academy

The Algae Academy booth will allow attendees the opportunity to see algae in action! The booth will be equipped with microscopes connected to a projector that will allow attendees to see algae up close with the help of our “Algae Experts”. After attendees get a quick lesson in Algae 101, they will receive their own mini Algae Academy Kit that will allow them to grow their own algae at home! The kit includes a guided experiment, live algae, necessary consumables and contact info for support.

UC San Diego Biomedical Engineering Society

Our demonstration will give students hands on experience with the fundamentals of genetic engineering. Using craft zippers, students will see how new genes can be incorporated into the genome and express a different function. Volunteers will teach and guide students through the demonstration alongside a poster board that contains informative concepts.

Come and participate in an interactive experiment and learn all about the fun science programs we offer to the community!

Heron Therapeutics

At the Heron Booth attendees will make SLIME!
And play our version of Wheel of Fortune called “Wheel of Organs”. Spin the wheel that has different Internal organs (i.e. Lungs, Brain, Thyroid) on it. You will then identify the organ you land on to the organ on the “Organ Man” drawing. If you identify the correct organ you win a prize.
