Masked vs. Unmasked Facial Expressions

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have had to wear masks when communicating with others. This creates challenges in face to face communication, as face masks cover facial expressions that are necessary for easy understanding of emotions. In this pre-recorded video, learn about the different characteristics of facial expressions and how they convey emotions. Then, test your new knowledge by guessing the facial expression on a masked person.

Girl Scouts Brownies and Juniors - STEM Careers Exploration Badge

Inviting Girl Scouts Brownies and Juniors - a special workshop just for you to fulfill the requirements for her STEM Career Exploration Badge.

At our workshops, girls use the Engineering Design Process to understand a real-world issue, create a design build around the topic, and will have the opportunity to show off their go-getter ingenuity to their fellow Girl Scouts. Girls are encouraged to wear their sash/vest.

The even will be open to all, so feel free to register even if you are not a Girl Scout.

Illumina, Inc. is a life sciences company that develops, manufactures, and sells various products essential for understanding DNA. Join Skype-a-Scientist and Illumina for a livestream session on April 28th, 2021 from 10-11a (PST). During this session students will learn about various career opportunities at a life sciences company and be able to ask a diverse group of Illumina professionals about their educational background and career journey. This session is ideal for middle school, high school, undergraduate, and graduate students.

Understanding COVID-19 - A Conversation for Kids & Teens

Over the past year of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists and medical professionals have been grappling to understand the science of this novel virus, how it spreads and how to manage it through public health guidelines, vaccine development and distribution. It can feel like information overload, especially for kids and teens. Speakers in this session will break down the complexity of COVID-19 into an engaging, casual conversation starting with an experiment with germs and washing hands.

Women in STEAM

This program provides space for young women to learn from and be inspired by women leaders across a range of STEAM industries. Each speaker will share their career journey and how they have overcome challenges. The program will close with a live Q&A, so be sure to tune in live!

REMAKE LEARNING DAYS - FREE Virtual Maker & Science Family STEAM Challenge: Alice’s Flamingo Croquet

Now the whole family can get in on the Challenge Island Maker and Science fun! Gather your tribe and celebrate Remake Learning Day Alice-in-Wonderland-style, with Alice’s Flamingo Croquet from our Fantastic Fiction Island. Interact virtually with families from across the county while collaborating, engineering, and imagining your way through a STEAMtastic family fun activity! All you need is a few basic household supplies and a device to log into our virtual classroom. Once registered you will receive a supplies list to go scavenger hunt with and a Zoom link to join the workshop.

Life Science XP Education Symposium

The Biocom Institute Education Symposium brings together educators, nonprofits and industry partners who are reimagining Life Science/Biotech learning experiences in K-12 classrooms, schools and districts. The goal of the symposium is to experience and learn from these innovations first-hand with active practitioners and partner providers. Participants engage in a variety of professional learning and networking opportunities to connect with innovative educators and industry experts & scientists.

Biz Kid$ Teacher Training Webinar Workshop

SDCCU launched the Biz Kid$ program in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education and the County of San Diego, in support of Live Well San Diego, in 2015. Biz Kid$ is an award-winning, comprehensive financial literacy program focused on teaching students how to use credit wisely and about the importance of saving, budgeting, investing and giving back to their communities. The Biz Kid$ program and all episodes are based on national standards for financial literacy and entrepreneurship education, and have been mapped to individual state standards.

STEM in San Diego: Resources & Needs

The purpose of this convening will be to collectively explore the current state of STEM in the region, identify STEM resources/partners and discuss STEM needs in the greater San Diego area. We hope that by bringing important stakeholders together we can host a cohesive conversation about the importance of approaching STEM in San Diego through a multifaceted lens. STEM is much more than education, it is the fastest growing workforce sector, a booming industry in San Diego and provides ample opportunity for upward mobility - especially among for those from underrepresented backgrounds.
