STEM Possible is a career-pathways program geared toward high school juniors and seniors. Piloted in STEM Week 2019, the objective of STEM Possible is to show San Diego County’s high school students that no matter their interests or strengths, there is a place for them in the region’s science, technology, engineering, arts and math, or STEAM, industries. Each STEM Possible program serves 100-200 high school juniors and seniors and is made up of three main components, detailed below.

1. Exposure to STEAM Opportunities | Career Panel

The program starts with an inspirational panel of STEAM role models that encourage the students to pursue their passions to find rewarding STEM careers. These panelists represent science, technology, engineering, and math careers (1 panelist per field, with one additional panelist that represents a job that illustrates the intersection between STEM and art.) The moderated panel wraps up with a student-led Q&A before the students break up into two groups for the remainder of the day.

2. Consider Yourself in STEAM | Interactive Workshop

The students participate in an interactive workshop delivered by one of our community partners. The lesson provides an opportunity for the students to think about their strengths, interests, and core values generally. Then, the instructor helps the students connect their skills and interests to potential career paths in the STEAM industry. The objective is to help students understand the robust job opportunities that exist in STEM industries and to “think outside the box” when envisioning their futures in the world of STEAM.

3. Career Pathway Exploration | Networking Session with STEAM Professionals

Another objective of this program is to highlight the various educational options and career paths to attain fulfilling, stable jobs in STEAM industries.  Students participate in a career-fair style professional networking session that connects the students directly to some of San Diego’s local STEM role models. Called “STEM Role Models,” these STEAM professionals have unique jobs that may match the students’ own skills and interests as identified in the interactive workshop. Students are tasked with engaging with each professional to learn about the various career paths, required education and/or certification for these jobs, what a day in the life is like for each professional, etc. In addition to providing a space for high school juniors and seniors to consider their opportunities, this portion of the program also encourages professional communication and networking.
